Bicycle Culture……The Adventures of Tintin
The Adventures of Tintin (by Herge) have been adapted into a film by Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson set for release in the US later this month. Some Tintinologists don’t care for the movie; but, I’m keeping an open mind and hoping for the best.
Here’s a European magazine cover promoting the 1982 Tour de France with Tintin leading a breakaway with Captain Haddock, Prof. Calculus, and Thompson and Thompson in pursuit.

As a fellow fan of Tintin I also await the upcoming release with a certain ambivalence; on the one hand I’m sure it’ll be tons of fun and great to see Tintin expanded into a fresh new format, but I also feel caution about an icon being dumbed down and commercialized. Tintin has always been a bit of a under-the-radar pleasure (as an American), but I suspect that’s about to change.
